Funding
The Big Opportunity Direct is only aware of a few funding sources that are 2012-related. This means that you may have to use other sources of funding to get 2012-related projects funded, which is why we have included details of funding databases.
2012-related funding sources
2012 London Cultural Skills Fund
Your organisation must be fully registered on the CompeteFor website to apply for this. For more information about CompeteFor see our Contract Opportunities page.
The fund is aimed at developing and gaining skills in the arts and creative sectors, and grants of £25,000 - £50,000 are available.
The target group is "small organisations and community groups, who want to contribute to the range of cultural activities taking place during the Cultural Olympiad."
They also "want to support strong community-based skills, training and employment support projects" and they are also interested in hearing from "local third sector organisations particularly minority-led organisations. We are seeking projects that will work with groups who are not usually involved in arts or cultural projects to explore the different cultures that exist in London." This can include disabled people, lesbian and gay men, BAME people and faith groups, travellers and homeless people, old people, care leavers, ex-offenders and refugees.
They want to fund:
- Projects that provide specific skills training to enable beneficiaries to meet identified skills shortages in the creative and cultural industries; and/or
- Initiatives supporting beneficiaries transition to cultural and creative employment and career development for emerging cultural practitioners through showcasing and exhibition opportunities; and/or
- Activities which encourage active learning and participation in arts and cultural events, which are taking place across the capital in the run up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games; and/or
- Projects that increase the reach of services either geographically or in order to improve access in the target groups.

In the run-up to the Games, there is a drive to increase the number of people training to be sports officials – particularly those who may be under-represented in this field (e.g. women, people with disabilities, Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic people or refugees).
You may be able to get financial support towards training in a variety of sports, if you are over 16 and live in London.
There is support available towards the cost of
- the course, licence, registration and membership costs,
- equipment and clothing costs associated with the course as specified by the relevant Governing Body,
- travel costs to and from the course and 15 hours of officiating,
- costs of childcare or adult care costs incurred to attend course and 15 hours of officiating,
- and accommodation costs outside of London incurred to complete the course or your 15 hours of officiating (where specified as a requirement by the National Governing Body).
There are six steps to applying, which you can find out about here, or email bursary@continuumleisure.co.uk or phone 020 7554 8691.
